Xu Zhongnan

(Chinese , b. 1872 - 1953 )

a native of nanchang, jiangxi province, whose courtesy name was old man amidst bamboos, he named his study “qi bi mountain house”. Greatly influenced by dai xi, a painter of qing dynasty, his works were reminiscent of dai xi’s in terms of composition, strokes and coloring. Besides, he was also influenced by the shanghai painting school and su dongpo, a famous painter and literary man during the southern song dynasty, so the figures painted by him were vivid and lifelike, and mountains and rivers were deep and subtle in meaning, and pines and bamboos tall and straight with an elegant and graceful bearing.
